The birdie point of the round has helped the Norwegian golfer 23 bring the Mayakoba Golf Classic 2020 title with a narrow gap with the runner-up just one stick.
Poor the top of Emiliano Grillo 2 strokes when entering the decisive round, Viktor Hovland made a comeback thanks to a 65-stroke (-6) scoreboard that collected 7 birdies and 1 bogey. In particular, the 18-hole birdie putt from a distance of 10 feet, the El Camaleon Golf Club in Mexico was the key to Hovland’s 20-point victory. This is the second title this season for the young Norwegian player since turning professional in 2019, after the Puerto Rico Open in February.
In addition, the Mayakoba Classic trophy also makes Hovland the fifth European golfer since 1945 to have many victories in Tour before age 24 (Rory McIlroy – 6, Seve Ballesteros – 3, Sergio Garcia – 3 and Jon Rahm – 2).
Hovland’s biggest competitor was Aaron Wise, a golfer that kept top of the day with a 63-stroke (-8) bogey-free round. Wise also entered from the first nine lines and accumulated 5 strokes from 3 birdies and Eagle hole 7 par 5. Nine lines later, Wise scored consecutive birdie from holes 13 to 15 to have the same score -19. However, having only par points in the last three holes made Wise pity on runner-up.
“I had some amazing hits, besides the bad holes. Everything is shown here, ”Wise said of his best round ever since his first win at AT&T Byron Nelson 2018.
Adam Long and Tom Hoge share third place (-17). At -16, the group of three T5 golferers include Harris English, Billy Horschel and Lucas Glover.
